Kid's Karate

Keith Geyer with winning Kid's black belt team

Learning the art of Karate has many advantages for children. Through my teaching experience I have learnt that all children are unique and benefit in different ways. Apart from being an excellent form of self defence, Karate improves fitness, strength, flexibility and general body conditioning.

Karate requires a high level of mental discipline and can help to improve a child's concentration span. It can also help children with learning disabilities to learn focus and mental agility. I have seen many children's self-confidence grow as they become more skilled.

If taught correctly, Karate teaches children the importance of treating others with courtesy and respect.

Karate for Kids

I am 15 years old and have been a black belt for just over 2 years.

I started Karate at the age of 6. My Sensei (which means Teacher in Japanese) says that is a good age to start. In the beginning I never thought I could get this far, but I just took it step-by-step.

I found the gradings every four months for a different coloured belt an excellent way to motivate me.

During the nine years that I have been doing Karate, I noticed my Strength, Speed and Agility improving tremendously. Having these basic skills enhances my ability in other sports as well.

Learning the Katas (which are a combination of movements performed like a dance) helps my co-ordination, concentration and my ability to learn and remember sequences of movement.

Kumite (fighting) is my favourite aspect of Karate. I enjoy Kumite because it requires tactics, timing, agility and speed. It equips you to defend yourself and also teaches you self-control and respect for your opponent.

I really enjoy being part of a Karate club - I have made many good friends, girls and guys!

During the year we have a fitness competition as well as Kata and Kumite competitions. These are great to compete in and give you something to work towards.

Through Karate I have travelled to the USA, Paris, Spain and South Africa to compete in international competitions. My best result was a bronze medal in the world championships in Paris. I am striving to improve on that in the future.

Karate is a great Sport!
